A Transformer Breather Cartridge System is a pre packaged stainless steel breather charged with cobalt chloride blue or REACH compliant orange indicating silica gel, supplied in the standard sizes for grid transformer moisture protection across the high voltage transmission and distribution network.
Moisture Protection for Oil Filled Transformers
Every oil filled transformer above 100 kVA carries a breather that protects the insulating oil from atmospheric moisture during the cooling cycle. As the transformer cools the oil contracts and atmospheric air is drawn into the expansion volume; without the breather, water vapour in that air dissolves into the oil and accelerates the cellulose insulation breakdown. The SorbiTech Transformer Breather Cartridge System is the pre packaged solution: a stainless steel canister charged with the indicating silica gel, sized for the standard transformer breather mounting.
Silica Gel Grade Selection
Two indicating silica gel grades are offered. Silica Gel Blue is the classical cobalt chloride indicator (shifts from blue to pink as the gel saturates); proven, low cost, decades of grid utility deployment. Silica Gel Orange is the REACH compliant methyl violet indicator (shifts from orange to dark green); the cobalt free alternative for installations in EU and other regulated jurisdictions. Both grades fit the same canister and the same breather mounting, so the swap is a direct drop in replacement.
Cartridge Construction and Standard Sizes
The cartridge is fabricated in 316L stainless steel for the long term grid environment, with viewing windows on the body for visual inspection of the colour change without opening the unit. Standard sizes match the major transformer OEM breather mountings: ABB, Siemens, Hitachi, GE, Schneider, Areva. Quick disconnect fittings make field replacement a 5 minute operation without disturbing the transformer oil.
Grid Wide Cartridge Replacement Programme
Grid utility customers with hundreds or thousands of substations retain SorbiTech for a coordinated replacement programme: cartridge inventory matched to the maintenance cycle, scheduled delivery to district depots, asset register integration with the operator EAM system, and documented chain of custody for the cobalt chloride spent cartridges (classified as hazardous waste under EU REACH). The programme is typically renewed annually across the grid asset life.
