Power & Utilities

Transformer breathers, SF₆ gas drying, condensate polishing, and boiler feedwater treatment for the power generation and electric utility sector.

Quick Answer

For the power and utilities sector, SorbiTech supplies indicating silica gel for transformer breathers, molecular sieve dryers for sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆) switchgear gas, activated carbon for condensate polishing, and on site nitrogen for inerting gas insulated lines. Every grade ships with the documentation that the asset owner needs for IEC 60296 and IEC 62271 compliance.

Power generation and grid utilities face 30 to 40 year asset lives, regulated reliability targets above 99.97 percent, and increasing focus on SF₆ emissions reduction under the EU F-Gas Regulation. The recurring SorbiTech duties are transformer breather desiccation, SF₆ gas drying and purification, and condensate polishing in steam cycle plants.

Power & Utilities

Adsorbents Across the Power Generation and Grid

The power and utilities sector covers steam cycle and combined cycle power generation, hydro and renewable plants, the high voltage transmission grid, and the distribution network down to the substation. SorbiTech serves the sector with silica gel for transformer breathers (the highest volume product), molecular sieves and activated alumina for the gas insulated switchgear circuit, activated carbon for condensate polishing in the boiler cycle, and on site PSA nitrogen for cable inerting and substation maintenance.

Transformer Breathers and Switchgear Desiccation

Every oil filled transformer above 100 kVA carries a breather that protects the insulating oil from atmospheric moisture during cooling cycles. Without the breather, water ingress accelerates the cellulose insulation breakdown and shortens the transformer service life. SorbiTech supplies cobalt chloride blue gel or the REACH compliant orange gel in pre packaged stainless steel cartridges sized to the standard transformer breather mounting. The cartridge replacement aligns to the grid maintenance cycle and is documented in the substation asset register.

Sulphur Hexafluoride Gas Drying and Purification

High voltage gas insulated switchgear runs on sulphur hexafluoride (SF₆), the dielectric of choice up to 800 kV. Trace moisture in SF₆ accelerates dielectric breakdown and forms corrosive hydrofluoric acid on the internal components. A dedicated molecular sieve dryer charged with 3A or 13X sieve removes the residual water before the gas is charged to the switchgear. Under the EU F-Gas Regulation operators must also recover, recycle, and document the SF₆ inventory; SorbiTech supports this with the recovery dryer trains.

Condensate Polishing for Steam Cycle Plants

Boiler feedwater in steam cycle power plants must meet ultra low conductivity, low silica, and low dissolved oxygen targets to protect the boiler and turbine internals from corrosion and deposition. The SorbiTech condensate polishing stage uses GAC 1240 upstream of mixed bed ion exchange to remove the dissolved organic carbon and trace hydrocarbon that would otherwise foul the resin. The combined train extends the resin campaign life by 30 to 50 percent.

On Site Nitrogen for Cable and Substation Maintenance

Gas insulated lines and gas insulated substations are inerted with nitrogen during installation and during cable maintenance. A mobile PSA nitrogen generation package on a rental basis delivers the contracted purity on site, removing the cost and logistics of delivered cylinder gas during scheduled maintenance windows.

Reliability and Long Asset Life Service

Power and grid assets run for 30 to 40 years and the SorbiTech service contracts are scaled to that timeframe. The standard programme aligns the silica gel cartridge replacement, the SF₆ dryer regeneration, and the condensate polishing media changeout to the operator scheduled maintenance windows, so no SorbiTech service drives an unplanned outage. The asset register documentation supports the operator reliability reporting to the grid regulator.
