Carbon Molecular Sieve CMS 260L
Affordable carbon molecular sieve. 1.2 to 1.8 mm pellets, sub 10 Angstrom pore, 95 to 99.9 percent N2 from compressed air at 7 to 10 barg.
CMS 260L is a kinetically tuned carbon molecular sieve for medium flow nitrogen PSA. The sub 10 Angstrom pore admits oxygen at 3.46 Angstrom faster than nitrogen at 3.64 Angstrom, delivering 95 to 99.9 percent N2 from compressed air at 7 to 10 barg under a 60 to 120 second cycle. Manufactured by SorbiTech in 1.2, 1.5, and 1.8 mm pellets.

What CMS 260L Is
CMS 260L is a kinetically tuned carbon molecular sieve produced to ISO 9001:2015. The pore mouth is calibrated narrower than 10 Angstrom so oxygen, at 3.46 Angstrom kinetic diameter, enters the pellet several times faster than nitrogen at 3.64 Angstrom. Under the 60 to 120 second adsorption cycle this kinetic gap delivers nitrogen at 95 to 99.9 percent purity from compressed air at 7 to 10 barg.
Three pellet sizes (1.2 mm, 1.5 mm, 1.8 mm) match bed depth and pressure drop to the PSA package geometry. Bulk density holds 0.60 to 0.66 g/ml, BET surface approximately 1050 m2/g, crush strength approximately 45 N. The pellet tolerates repeated pressure cycling with minimal attrition.
Where CMS 260L Is Used
- Tank inerting and pipeline blanketing across oil and gas, chemical, and pharmaceutical sites
- Lab gas supply and analytical instrumentation
- Food and beverage modified atmosphere packaging
- Metal heat treating and bright annealing under nitrogen
- Welding shielding and laser cutting at 95 to 99.9 percent purity
- Pharmaceutical reactor inerting at the standard high purity range
For 99.99 percent purity duty SorbiTech specifies CMS 350KT. For 99.99999 percent (7N) service SorbiTech specifies CMS 450HP.
Feed Air Conditioning
CMS is intolerant of liquid water, oil aerosols, and particulate above 1 micron. Feed air must reach ISO 8573 class 1.4.1 through refrigerated or membrane drying, coalescing filtration, and particulate filtration. With the feed conditioned correctly, CMS 260L holds purity for 7 to 10 years before noticeable drift.
Where the upstream compressor has known oil carryover, SorbiTech specifies an upstream guard bed of matched pellet activated carbon to capture the residual oil ahead of the CMS bed.
Pellet Size Selection
- 1.2 mm: deepest beds, lowest pressure drop, fastest mass transfer in short cycle systems
- 1.5 mm: standard medium duty, default for retrofit replacement at the original pellet diameter
- 1.8 mm: shallow beds at higher cycle velocity, preferred where the operator carries spare bed volume
Forms and Supply
Supplied as 1.2, 1.5, or 1.8 mm cylindrical pellets in 25 kg drums or 500 kg big bags. COA per lot with separation factor and pellet integrity verified. Drop in replacement for retrofit PSA packages without core system redesign. Available as media or inside the SorbiTech PSA nitrogen generation package.
