Industrial Process Water Purification

Process water polishing for industrial manufacturing using activated carbon and activated alumina to remove dissolved contaminants ahead of reverse osmosis, demineralisation, or direct process use.

The Challenge
Industrial manufacturing, electronics, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, petrochemical, requires process water that meets tight specifications on dissolved organics, residual chlorine, and trace contaminants. Direct municipal supply rarely meets these limits; on site polishing is mandatory.
Quick Answer

Industrial process water purification uses activated carbon (for dissolved organics and chlorine) and optional activated alumina (for fluoride and arsenic) ahead of reverse osmosis, demineralisation, or direct process use. The polishing stage protects downstream resin and membrane and delivers process water to the operator quality specification.

Manufacturing Process Water Has Tight Specifications

Industrial manufacturing demands process water that meets specifications well beyond drinking water standards. Electronics fabs require ultra pure water with conductivity below 18 megohm-cm and total organic carbon below 5 ppb; pharmaceutical manufacturing requires water meeting USP Purified Water or Water for Injection grade; food and beverage processing requires water meeting the food contact regulations. Direct municipal supply does not meet any of these, on site polishing is mandatory.

GAC Polishing Protects Downstream Equipment

The SorbiTech polishing stage uses GAC 1240 upstream of reverse osmosis or demineralisation. The carbon removes residual chlorine (which oxidatively damages RO membranes and ion exchange resin), dissolved organics (which foul the membrane and the resin), and trace taste and odour compounds. The combined train extends the downstream resin and membrane life by 30 to 50 percent compared to no polishing.

Optional Activated Alumina for Fluoride and Arsenic

Where the inlet water carries fluoride or arsenic, common in groundwater supplies across geological belts, an upstream activated alumina bed removes these inorganic contaminants. The combined GAC plus alumina train delivers process water meeting tight industrial specifications from a wide range of inlet water qualities.

Delivery and Service

Delivered as a packaged polishing skid by SorbiTech or as an integrated part of a larger process water plant by SorbiTech. The SorbiTech media is supplied with the certificate of analysis and the food contact compliance documentation where required. Sector coverage spans industrial water, pharmaceutical, food and beverage, and petrochemicals.

Selection Guidance

Stage GAC for chlorine, taste, and dissolved organics; add activated alumina for fluoride or arsenic where present; protect downstream reverse osmosis or demineralisation with the polishing stage.
